Many cases of oral thrush in babies respond well to natural remedies for thrush. If you prefer a natural cure for your baby's yeast infection, you can try one of the six following simple natural home treatments.

1. Gentian Violet

Gentian violet is one of the most effective natural remedies for thrush. It is available without prescription.

I have used it for my son's oral thrush and yeast diaper rash. It worked like a miracle.
The only thing you have to be very careful with your clothes it stains and can become very messy.

There is one very strong argument against using Gentian Violet. A recent study done in Australia linked Gentian Violet to cancer of the mouth. Nevertheless many doctors around the world consider it safe to use.

2. Baking soda

The idea behind baking soda is that it creates an inhospitable environment for yeast.

How to use: Take 1 teaspoon baking soda and mix this with one small cup of water.

Wipe this mixture on the inside of baby's mouth after every feeding. This can also be used on mothers nipples after breastfeeding. Make every day a fresh mixture.

3. Acidophilus powder

Lactobacillus acidophilus means acid-loving milk-bacterium and is one of the better natural remedies for thrush.

Capsules of Acidophilus restore the natural flora of the body. The acid produced by Acidophilus help control the growth of the fungus Candida Albicans. For baby's mouth you can get Acidophilus in powdered form.

How to use: Apply some with a clean finger to the inside of baby's mouth.

4. Coconut oil for thrush

The compounds capric acid and lauric acid in coconut have anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. The same fatty acids present in human breast milk protect a nursing infant from infections.

Recent studies show that nursing mothers who eat coconut oil or products have increased levels of capric and lauric acid and this way giving their baby even more protection against viruses, bacteria and protozoa. Coconut oil can be safely used for babies.

How to use: You can use coconut oil  for cooking or external on the skin. Breastfeeding moms can apply it on their nipples.
You can order refined and unrefined coconut oil here.

5. Black walnut thrush treatment

For ages people have used the thick green walnut hull as natural remedy for thrush and to get rid of parasites like tapeworms. The oil processed out of the unripe fruit hulls has anti-fungal and anti-septic properties. It is also used as an antifungal for Candida yeast, ringworm, athlete's foot and thrush.

How to use: Apply 10-30 drops 3x a day. Black walnut oil is used internally and externally.

Warning: If you are breastfeeding black walnut con stop lactation if taken internally.

6. Grapefruit seed extract to kill thrush

Last on our list of natural remedies for thrush is Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE). The extract is made of the pulp and seeds of grapefruit and is very rich in anti-oxidants and phytonutrients.

Studies show that it is effective in killing a great number of bacterial and viral strains as well as many fungi. It is often used to treat thrush infections because grapefruit seed extract raises the pH levels of the blood, making it difficult for the thrush fungus to survive. The extract is a very acid liquid and should never be used in its pure form.

How to use: Add 10 drops of GSE to an ounce of distilled water (30 ml). Apply the mixture with a cotton swab to baby's tongue and inner mouth. Repeat this every hour or after every feeding. It may taste a bit bitter but that will quickly go away.

Natural remedies for thrush - Clove oil and tea tree oil

Clove oil has anti-fungal and anti-septic properties and for centuries clove oil is used to give relief for toothache. Parents need to be careful using unproven, potentially dangerous remedies like clove oil and tea tree oil on babies.

Clove oil may work well for thrush but is not suitable during pregnancy or on babies and children under six.

There are reported cases of clove oil toxicity in infants, for instance a 3 month old baby developed hepatic (liver) failure and a 7 month old baby developed central nervous depression after ingesting clove oil.

Consult your doctor before trying natural remedies for thrush. Some of these thrush home remedies are not enough to treat more severe and persistent yeast infections but can also cause a health threatening situation for your child.
