with a temporary pool fence

A temporary pool fence also referred to as a pool barrier, mesh fence, kiddy fence, child fence or safety fence is used to prevent children from drowning in the swimming pool.

Children love to play with water. But water can become a drowning hazard for young children. About 300 children under the age of 5 drown every year in swimming pools.

Pool Safety Rules.

Following these Pool Safety Rules will keep your kids save in the swimming pool.

  • Always supervise your children when swimming in the pool.

  • Never let them in the pool with thunder and lightning.

  • Warn children not to run near the pool because the edge can be very slippery.

  • Don`t use large floating objects in the pool, they can block your view of the kids.

  • The person supervising should know how to swim and know about CPR.

  • Install a pool alarm and a swimming pool safety fence.

  • Keep pool cleaning products locked away.

For extra safety you can install an underwater pool alarm which sounds when something hits the water.

Swimming Pool Safety Gates

A Swimming Pool Safety Gate can prevent lots of these tragedies. Every swimming pool should be completely fenced and gates should be self-closing and self-latching so they can never be left accidentally open. Look into getting a swimming pool fence to provide the protection you need as a pool owner.

An inground pool is especially easy to fall into accidentally and even if you don't have children you have to take the necessary safety measures.

What to look for when you buy a swimming pool safety gate.

  • The construction of the fence is very important. The poles are the strenght of the fence and should be made of strong and sturdy materials like reinforced aluminum or stainless steel.
  • Look for a pool fence with a mesh that is coated with UV protection which prevents mildew and sun damage. The mesh should be strong but still have a good visibility into the pool area.
  • The fence should have a self-closing gate that is stable enough to stand on it's own and not be supported by the rest of the fence.

Apart from these Pool Safety Rules there are other dangers the owners of a swimming pool should consider. Here is a list of some common swimming pool deficiencies.

Swimming pool deficiencies

Electrical. Faulty underwater lighting; aging electrical wiring and extension cords falling or being pulled into the water can result in peolpe becoming incapacitated by stray current in the water and one or more persons jump in or reach out to save the victim, resulting in multiple electrocutions or serious shocks.

Slippery swimming pool deck. Keep swimming pool decks clean because when surfaces age and weather they will develop algae making them very dangerous and slippery.

Bacteria and parasites. In the summer with higher temperatures infants and children are especially at risk for infection from waterborne bacteria. These bacteria cause serious gastrointestinal problems. Symptoms can range from diarrhea, abdominal cramps, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes fever.

Ladders and Tiled Steps. Hand rails that become loose over time and moving water over tiled steps can increase the risk of a fall or injury.

Swimming Pool Pumps. The power of a swimming pool pump is strong enough to force to trap, drown and disembowel a person. For this reason single suction main drains are now illegal and every pool should have dual suction main drains spaced apart from each other.

Pool winter covers. Can be very tempting to walk on for a child. Make sure your pool cover is able to hold the weight of a child in case your child falls or walks on it.

Diving boards. Increase the risk of spinal and head trauma after diving in swimming pools that are not deep enough.

A temporary or permanent pool fencing?

A temporary pool fence can become dangerous when parts of the fencing are temporary removed like when people are having a party at the pool.

With young children permanent pool fencing is a safer option, but some people prefer a temporary pool fence because it can be removed when their children get older and leave the house.

Types of pool fencing

Pool fences come in different styles, shapes and designs. Permanent pool fences are usually made of metal or wood. Other materials used for pool fencing are vinyl, glass and plastic.

Glass pool fencing allows unobstructed views of your swimming pool. And the toughend glass ensures that it doesn't crash when somebody accidentally bumps into it.
