"How to choose the right toy for your child"

We all know that children love toys. But how do we choose safe baby toys for our children? Far too often CPSC recalls toys that pose a hazard for our little ones.

Every year many toy related accidents are treated in the emergency rooms. Unfortunately some of these accidents are fatal. In order to protect children from these hazardous toys, in the USA, UK and Europe toys must meet the requirements of the Toy Safety Regulations.

This means that toys must pass certain safety tests, to prevent accidents like:

  • Chocking or aspiration of small pieces.
  • Strangulation.
  • Cuts from sharp edges.
  • Poisoning from lead or other toxic substances.

Toy Safety Checklist

Use this toy safety checklist to decide what are safe baby toys for your child.

  • Look for small little parts pieces like buttons for eyes on a teddy bear.

  • Check the suggested age on the label.

  • Check if the toy has any sharp edges.

  • Are there any weak or breakable parts?

  • Avoid toys that shoot objects in the air.

  • Toys that make loud noises can damage a child's hearing.

  • Electrical toys with batteries. Very young children can put the batteries into their mouth.

  • Check for any liquid substances inside a toy .This substance may be toxic.

Check regularly with the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) for recalls. Check your children's toys regularly and dispose of damaged toys.

Keep the toys of older children out of reach of the little ones. It is important to teach your children to tidy up after playing; this prevents children falling on toys and getting hurt.

Top baby toys are not just entertaining, but also educational and stimulating their creativity. Toys should be solid, strong and well made.

If you are looking for safe baby toys, go green and buy organic baby toys.

Toys made of organic cotton or wool is also a lovely idea for a baby gift. Organic cotton is farmed naturally. It is grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.

For safe baby toys consider wooden toys or hand made baby toys. But why not try and make your own home made baby toys.

Home made baby toys are safe, inexpensive and unique. Avoid baby chew toys made of PVC. Check the package for PVC-free or phthalate-free toys for teething babies. Many parents prefer natural wooden teething rings for their baby. Read more about safe teething toys.

When you buy a toy you should carefully read the label and check if it has a warranty card.

Manufacturers test their toys and put the appropriate labels. CPSC is checking on toys and warning us for possible dangerous toys. But in the end it is us as parents to decide which toys are suitable and safe for our children to play with.
