Important safety rules to prevent kitchen hazards

kitchen safety rules for momsKitchen safety rulesfor momsWhen you have little children in your kitchen it is important you stick to certain safety rules. Our kitchens are full of potential hazards and probably the most dangerous place for a child.

The easiest would be to use a baby gate to stop young children from going in the kitchen.

But sometimes you do not have a choice, when you have to cook dinner and at the same time watch your little baby.

Try to create a safe area for your child by using highchairs, safety gates or playpens. A young child can easily get burned by leaning to a hot oven door or grab a pan with boiling hot food.

Here are some 10 useful kitchen safety tips on how to baby proof your kitchen.

1. Use stove knob covers

To prevent your child from turning on the stove use stove knob covers or install a stove guard barrier. Prefer to use the backburners of the stove so your kid cannot reach the handles of pots and pans.

2. Use an oven lock

With an oven lock you can prevent your child from getting burned by a hot oven.

3. Put locks on cabinets

Keep all cleaning products locked away in a cabinet. Ingesting of these products can cause serious poisoning symptoms.

4. Keep counters clean

Keep dangerous appliances to the rear of the counter. There should be no appliance cords dangling of the counter so that children cannot pull appliances off the bench.

5. Put a latch on the fridge

Put a refrigerator latch so your child cannot open the fridge.

6. Cover the trash

Your trashcan should be covered so your child cannot open it.

7. Cover electrical outlets.

Check if your kitchens electrical outlets have ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection.

8. Be careful with fridge magnets

Remove all small objects like fridge magnets that may become a chocking hazard for your child.

9. Lock sharp objects away.

Keep glassware, plastic bags, knifes and other sharp objects locked in cabinets.

10. Remove tablecloths and placemats.

If your child pulls on a tablecloth he may at the same time pull everything on the table on top of him.

But if you use a highchair be careful not to put it anywhere near the stove.

Never leave your baby alone in the highchair and make sure he is buckled in at all times. And if you use a folding highchair it should have a locking device to keep the chair from collapsing.

Kitchen safety rules for making baby food

The kitchen is the place you will start making your first baby food. At the age of 4 to 6 months your baby is ready to try its first baby food.

Keep your baby safe from symptoms of food poisoning by practicing proper food safety and food storage safety. If you are a busy mom a baby food maker can make life a lot easier. Some can steam, blend, defrost and even reheat baby's meals.

Proper food safety by washing your hands can help bacteria spreading to your baby.

Microwaves are an easy way of heating baby food. Some manufacturers do not recommend that their products be heated in a microwave oven. Always check the labels.

Some paediatricians do not recommend warming baby bottles in the microwave.

Microwaves heat the formula unevenly. The milk in the bottle can be lukewarm from the outside and burning hot in the middle and than burn your baby's mouth.

Always shake the bottle well before use and try a few drops on your inner wrist. It is safer to use a Baby Bottle Warmer or some warmed tap water to warm the bottle.

Kitchen safety rules for older kids

A safe environment is your number one priority when you have children in your kitchen. Teach your children important kitchen safety rules, like washing their hands before and after handling food and not to touch a hot stove or food that just came out of the oven or microwave.
