Colic medicine - About safe and unsafe colic treatments
Have you heard of a colic medicine for infant colic but are not sure whether it is safe for your baby? For years doctors used to treat colic in babies with sedative medicine, pain killers or analgesics (e.g. opium) or anti-spasm drugs.
But because of potential serious side-effect, including death, now doctors recommend treating colicky babies with soothing measures like swaddling, shushing and swinging.
Still there are quit a few colic medicines on the market that claim to relief your infant's colic. I recommend you consult your pediatrician before trying one of the following remedies for baby colic.
Baby colic treatments
Baby colic drops with gripe water were first used in England in 1851 by English nannies. Colic Gripe water is a herbal remedy made of fennel, chamomile, aloe, blackthorn, ginger, vegetable carbon, caraway, lemon balm and peppermint .
Today’s Colic Calm Gripe Water is free of alcohol and sugar and is safe to use for infant colic.
Herbal remedies are safe to use in the quantities prescribed but can be harmful if taken in large quantities. Therefore keep them out of reach of little children.
Colic medicin: Gas drops
Simethicone helps the tiny bubbles swallowed during feeding join together to large bubbles. This makes it easier for your baby to get rid of the extra gas with a burp.
In many infant colic studies Simethicone has not been proven more effective than a placebo (sugar pill).
Hylands colic tablets
Hyland's Colic Tablets is a homeopathic remedy used for colic and gas pains caused by irritating food, feeding too quickly, swallowing air and upset baby tummies.
This colic medicin contains wild yam, chamomile, bitter apple and Lactose NF. Do not continue this remedy if the symptoms persist or get worse after using them for 7 days.
Sucrose taste has been shown to be a potent regulator of crying in newborn babies. Unfortunately sucrose seems only to work for a very short time, between 3 and 30 minutes.
Beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus reuteri reduce irritability and colic crying within 1 week in over 95 % of infants treated with Probiotics. Probiotics are the good bacteria that help fight indigestion, gas, stomach cramping and harmful bacteria.
Baby colic medicine with L. reuteri have been clinically tested on premature babies, newborns, infants, children, adults, pregnant women with no harmful side effects.
Traditional colic medicine
Dicyclomine and Hyoscyamine
Dicyclomine and Hyoscyamine are anti spasmodics. They relief spasms and gastro- intestinal problems.
These drugs were widely used until 1960 but because of their horrible side effects like breathing problems, apnea, seizures and coma they are rarely prescribed as colic medicin anymore.
Star anise tea
Baby colic cures with herbal star anise tea can be very dangerous. There are two types of herbs: the Chinese star anise and the Japanese star anise.
These herbs look identical only the Japanese star anise herb is toxic. There have been reports of babies having seizures after drinking this tea.
The FDA( Food and Drug Administration) advices people not to use this tea because they can so easily be confused.
Sedatives used as colic medicine
Sedatives like paregoric and alcohol. Paregoric is a camphorated tincture of opium.
These sedatives depress baby’s nervous system and cause abnormally deep sleep. Needless to say these drugs have great health risks and are not used any more.
